Scientists have suggested that eating only two meals a day contributes more to the treatment of type 2 diabetes than eating more frequent smaller portions.
Predicating the assertion on the results of trials on 54 subjects, the study, which was carried out in Prague under the supervision of lead scientist Dr Hana Kahleova, then advocated only eating breakfast and lunch for the diabetics.
She said, “The patients were really afraid they would get hungry in the evening but feelings of hunger were lower as the patients ate until they were satisfied.
“But when they ate six times a day the meals were not leaving them feeling satisfied. It was quite surprising.”
Kahleova also hailed the fact that the two-meals-a-day group had attained an average weight loss of 1.4 kilograms more than those taking six meals.
Liver fat content also reduced for both groups, but by a slightly larger amount for those on two large daily meals.
Diabetes is an incurable condition in which the body cannot control blood sugar levels, because of problems with the hormone insulin.
In type-2 diabetes, either the pancreas cells do not make enough insulin, or the body’s cells do not react properly to it. This is known as insulin resistance.
