MUS Press Release
Dated: 23rd July 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sheikh Zakzaky being refused critical medical attention and the ongoing oppression of the Shia Muslims in
Majlis e Ulama e Shia Europe (MUS Europe) are extremely concerned with the sad news from Abuja yesterday,
22nd July 2019, where police fired at peaceful protestors, killing 6 and injuring 30 people.
This is just the most recent example of the Nigerian government’s total lack of regard for its citizens, in particular
This has been highlighted by Amnesty international on a number of occasions, and they have also released a
statement after yesterday’s attack. From the statement:
“This new crackdown is part of a shocking pattern in which security forces have used live ammunition to disperse
IMN supporters who are simply exercising their freedom of expression.
“The lslamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) is a Shi’a religious and political organisation whose leader, Ibraheem
Yaqub El-Zakzaky, has been a proponent of Shi’a Islam in Nigeria since the 1980s. His detention was described by a
federal court in December 2016 as unlawful and unconstitutional.
An investigation by Amnesty in October 2018 showed that the use of excessive force by soldiers and police led to the
killing of at least 45 supporters of the IMN over two days. Between 12 and 14 December 2015, according to
Amnesty’s research, more than 350 IMN members were killed by security forces in Zaria, Kaduna State.”
The concern has now intensified regarding Sheikh Zakzaky as recent review of his health indicates that he may have
been fed a poisonous substance. The Nigerian regime, on the other hand, are not willing for him to be released for
treatment, despite his frail condition.
We call upon the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Rt. Hon Jeremy Hunt to take this up with the
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari as a matter of urgency.
MUS Europe has a strong record of calling upon our government to use diplomatic pressure against countries that
are in breach of human rights, and we hope that the government, headed by the new Prime Minister, Rt Hon Boris
Johnson, will raise his concerns over the unlawful detention of Sheikh Zakzaky as well as the fundamental right to
emergency medical attention.
